Culture Caching

Discovering Places has joined in the worldwide treasure hunt called Geocaching. As the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad campaign to inspire UK communities to explore their local environment, Discovering Places is working with Geocaching.com to encourage adventure and exploration in exciting UK locations and to discover the hidden stories that make these places unique.

Geocaching is a real global treasure hunt. Players in countries across the world try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using a smartphone or GPS device. Once they have found the containers with interesting facts and stories about the locations, players sign the container’s logbook and see what previous geocachers have left behind. Participants can then share their adventures with other intrepid geocachers online and via social media.

For Culture Caching, Discovering Places has created 5 new geocaches, which have been hidden across the UK  in surprising locations. Inspired by the 1908, 1948 and 2012 Games, the new geocaches will help unlock the locations’ stories and their Olympic and Paralympic heritage.

And it doesn’t stop at our 5 new geocache locations. We have also created a list of 40 great geocaches that have already been planted at both iconic and lesser-known UK sites, which will help you discover places that are steeped in heritage and culture.

All you need to get started is a free Geocaching.com Membership and a handheld GPS device or smartphone equipped with a geocaching application.
