Reliance Arcade, Brixton Market.Reliance Arcade, Brixton Market.

Where can we go to promenade after our Xmas lunch ……

I had thought I would take to the seaside and promenade down the pier at Brighton for this blog post but something caught my eye far closer to home.  It was something that had always caught my eye as I walked along the High Street in Brixton and made me smile. Wedged in between two large buildings was this little arcade – a hint of the labyrinth Arcades beyond that make up Brixton Market.

Reliance Arcade – Shop here and save money – sounds so dependable and reliable and right out of a 50’s advertising campaign.  When you walk through it becomes even more endearing.  Eclectic collection of shops no more than a deep and 2 foot wide – there is more space in the thoroughfare through than the shops themselves.  But the discovery of the day for me was the Egyptian Tomb facade that adorns the other end of Reliance Arcade in Electric Avenue.  I normally wander down Electric Avenue in the weekend when the street market and so I’ve never noticed it – but today with no market stalls and hardly anyone around I found it in all it’s glory!  It is such a wonderful contrast to the front of the arcade and to the world that busselling on around it!

Brixton Market has recently received a grade 2 listing and is have something of a transformation.  Down the many arcades you will find the most wonderful collection of shops.  But for me the main attraction is the collection of cafes all selling very fine coffee!  Unfortunately the market isn’t open on Christmas Day but every other day of my Xmas holiday I’ll be promenading down the road and through the arcades to my favourite coffee shop.

I’ll also be uploading my photo of the Egyptian Tomb Facade on the Walk the World website and putting Egypt on the map in Brixton!

Where will your Xmas promenades take you ?
