“We’re going to be the fox” said the boy with an elephant trunk and leopard skin cowboy hat before sprinting off through the woods … the bread we made is pink and blue and the courgettes and herbs freshly picked… the children we return are muddy and nattering excitedly about snail races and the frog that was sitting at the top of the tomato plants… Oasis Children’s Nature Garden home to 1 fox, many frogs, newts, birds, minibeasts and mayhem. Less than an acre expands to encompass woods, pond, picnic area, tree house (or plum picking station/zombie headquarters/dog house/elf world … depending on the day), vegetable patches, fruit trees, greenhouse, meadow, sandpit and club house, and holds it’s own amongst the estates of Stockwell.
Children are welcomed to come and explore and play Wed-Fri after school 3:30-5:30 or Sat 10-3:30 (during term time, get in touch for holiday opening), under 5s club runs Friday 10:30-12. Children under 5 need to be accompanied by an adult (and adults by a child). School and community groups use the space during the day for the diversity of an outdoor classroom for curriculum and confidence. Volunteers help garden and play and events regularly bring the community together for celebration, skill shares and spreading the fun. Up next we will play host to a permaculture course over 4 autumn weekends (starting Sept 8th) and Saturday 17th September Oasis’ Inclusion Festival.
